Physical Education

Intent

At Haddenham St Mary’s, our intent is to ensure that every child leaves primary school physically literate, with the knowledge, skills and motivation required to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and to continue participating in physical activity and sport throughout their lives.

Our Physical Education curriculum, delivered through the Twinkl Move PE Scheme, is designed to provide all pupils with a rich and progressive learning experience that supports both their physical development and personal growth. We are committed to offering all children:

– Access to a wide range of physical activities and sports,

– Opportunities to build resilience, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship,

– Regular participation in healthy competition,

– A lifelong enthusiasm for physical activity.

We also aim to raise the confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in delivering and assessing PE effectively, to ensure the best outcomes for every child

 Implementation

PE at Haddenham St Mary’s is delivered through the Twinkl Move PE Scheme, which provides a carefully structured, progressive programme from Reception to Year 2. The scheme ensures clear skill development across all year groups and is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and the DfE vision.

Key elements of our implementation include:

  • Two hours of high-quality PE each week for all children, across both indoor and outdoor environments;
  • Daily physical activity of at least 30 minutes, integrated into playtimes and classroom routines;
  • A curriculum covering key areas such as fundamental movement skills, games, dance, gymnastics, athletics and outdoor learning;
  • A clear focus on the development of teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship, including opportunities for pupils to organise and lead their own activities;
  • Use of the Twinkl Move assessment statements within our school-wide tracking system (Insight) to monitor and evaluate individual and group progress;
  • High-quality CPD and resources to increase teacher confidence in delivering and assessing PE;
  • Inclusive practices and differentiated provision to ensure that children of all abilities can access and succeed in PE;
  • A weekly after-school dance club that allows pupils to further develop skills and pursue their interests;
  • A growing programme of intra-school competition, including Sports Day and class challenges, with plans to expand this further in the coming year.

Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum is seen in children who are confident, enthusiastic and capable participants in physical activity. They develop not only physical competence but also the personal qualities needed for success in sport and in life, including resilience, respect, and teamwork.

As a result of our approach:

  • Children are physically literate and understand the importance of being active for their physical and mental health;
  • Pupils demonstrate clear progression in physical skills and personal development, supported by our use of Insight to track attainment and progression across the school;
  • Engagement and enjoyment in PE lessons are high, and children readily take part in extracurricular activities;
  • Staff are increasingly confident in teaching and assessing PE, leading to high-quality, consistent provision across classes;
  • All children, regardless of ability, are supported to achieve their potential in PE;
  • Children leave KS1 motivated and ready for further development in PE at KS2, with a strong foundation in both skill and attitude.

We continually review our provision through staff feedback, pupil voice and data analysis to ensure it meets the needs of all learners. As part of our next steps, we are enhancing our competitive offer to provide more structured and purposeful opportunities for children to experience and enjoy sport in a competitive context.
