Special Educational Needs
At Haddenham St Mary’s CE School we understand that each child is individual and unique. We are proud of our inclusive environment where we work hard as a team to enable all children to sparkle, shine and reach their full potential, building on their strengths, abilities, interests and needs. We acknowledge that some of our children may require additional support to learn and thrive throughout their time in school, whilst others may need intervention for a period of time.
Our inclusive environment aims to:
- enable every child to experience success
- promote confidence and self-esteem
- ensure that all children, whatever their educational needs, receive appropriate provision through a broad and balanced curriculum that is relevant and differentiated, and that demonstrates coherence and progression in learning
- make reasonable adjustments to ensure our children with SEND are given equal opportunities to take part in all aspects of the school’s provision
- identify, assess, record, and regularly review children’s progress and needs
- involve parents/carers in planning and supporting at all stages of their child’s development
- work collaboratively with parents, other professionals and support services
- ensure that the responsibility held by all staff and governors for supporting children with SEND is implemented and maintained
SEN Support
Where a child is identified as needing additional support in school, whether to achieve academic outcomes, support emotional wellbeing, social, sensory, communication or physical needs they may be placed on the Special Educational Needs register to closely monitor their progress, and a Pupil Learning Passport or Support Plan may be needed to outline the provision put in place to support the child. This action will be agreed with the child’s parents / carers. If appropriate we will request advice from professionals with the child’s parent / carer’s consent.
Here is our Annual Report which provides more information on how we support children with Special Educational Needs at our school:

Our provision for children with an Education and Healthcare Plan (EHCP)
We have an created an area called The Sapphire Suite in our school as part of the provision for children with an EHCP or undergoing assessment for an EHCP should they need time for smaller group teaching in an adapted environment to meet their needs away from the busy classroom. Trained staff members run daily Attention Autism “Bucket Time” sessions to develop listening and attention skills, as well as intensive interaction activities based on the children’s interests to support their communication and interaction targets, access to sensory regulation resources, a “dark room” with colourful lights, visual timetables and choice boards to support communication. We have created an adapted curriculum plan for those children in Key Stage One who are working below Year 1 expectations.
We use Cherry Garden branch maps to ensure accurate assessment of the progress of our children with or waiting for an EHCP who are working below Year 1 expectations. The branch maps can be seen here:
